There are many factors that influence the selection of packaging materials for medical devices, including the specific nature of the medical device, the intended sterilization methods, the intended use, expiry date, and transport and storage environments. The presentation will first give an overview of the different medical packaging materials and then review these primary considerations for materials selection. Reducing the environmental impact of medical packaging via materials selection will also be discussed using “life-cycle thinking”.
